Retailers control knives

Some Taranaki stores are already controlling knife sales in a bid to prevent crime.

Justice Minister Simon Power recently announced a collection of initiatives including limiting the sale of knives through a voluntary accord with retailers.

Taranaki Hunting and Fishing says it limits who it sells knives to, and the items are stored in a locked cabinet.

“Obviously if we get someone in here who doesn’t seem to be using it for good intentions then we take it upon ourselves not to sell it to them,” manager Shay Fairhurst said yesterday.

Mr Fairhurst said a lot of his customers were hunters, fisherman and farmers and carried knives on them 100 per cent of the time
